The Auerspergs: Architecture of Power
Welcome to Turjak Castle, which for almost nine hundred years served as the principal seat of the House of Auersperg (Slovenian: Turjaški), a noble family.
Standing on a terraced hill south of Ljubljana, the castle is both an architectural monument and a testament to the establishment and preservation of the family’s noble power. Its walls, repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt over the centuries, reflect the turbulent history of a dynasty first mentioned in written sources in the 11th century.
After the end of the Hungarian invasions, the border regions attracted noble families from the central part of the Holy Roman Empire. Among them were the Auerspergs, who were most likely of Bavarian origin.
The family reached the height of its influence between the 13th and 16th centuries. During this period, they became known as supporters of the Reformation and defenders of the province during the Ottoman incursions. Turjak Castle remained the seat of the family’s main branch until the Second World War.
The nearly thousand-year history of the family can be understood as a kind of architectural blueprint, founded on myths of origin and stories celebrating the heroic deeds of illustrious ancestors. Legends created within noble families reinforced a shared memory and presented their authority as ancient and legitimate.
An important, though often overlooked, foundation of dynastic power was the role of women. Through marriage alliances, property, social networks, and the bearing of heirs, they carried out the invisible work that enabled the continuation and expansion of the family line.
The Castle: A Symbol of Power and Prestige
First mentioned in 1220, though it is in fact even older. Discover how Turjak grew from a modest Romanesque fortified dwelling into the seat of one of the most distinguished noble families in Carniola.
Where Did the Auerspergs Come From?
A wild aurochs on the coat of arms, a rescued emperor, Roman ruins from which a castle is said to have risen. The legends surrounding the origins of the Auersperg family are at least as fascinating as the history recorded in historical sources.
