A Deputy Governor and a Lady of the Court
In 1382, the city of Trieste came under Habsburg rule. Two years later, Wilhelm I of Auersperg was appointed deputy governor of Trieste. His wife, Elisabeth of Reitenburg, served as Mistress of the Household at the Habsburg court. Their marriage reflects the new political alliances and strategic partnerships formed by the Auersperg family at the time.
With the arrival of the Habsburgs in Carinthia and Carniola, the balance of power in the region began to shift. The Auerspergs quickly recognized the Habsburgs as powerful allies, while the Habsburg rulers relied on loyal members of the local nobility to carry out their political ambitions in the region.
The separate branch of the Auersperg family founded through the marriage of Wilhelm and Elisabeth died out in the second generation. However, the offices and estates acquired during their time later passed to the main line of the Auersperg family.

A Woman with an Entrepreneurial Mind
Elisabeth of Reitenburg was the heiress of one of the most powerful noble families in Carniola. In addition to her substantial inheritance from Reitenburg (Čretež), she brought money, estates, and properties into her marriage with Wilhelm I of Auersperg, earned through her faithful service as Mistress of the Household at the Habsburg court under Duke Ernest the Iron-Willed.
Through Elisabeth’s inheritance, the Auerspergs acquired numerous estates as well as the hereditary office of provincial chamberlain (administrator of ducal property) in Carniola and the Slovene March.
After Wilhelm’s death, Elisabeth successfully pursued the family’s interests together with his youngest cousin Dipold, ensuring a smooth transition within the lineage. Elisabeth and Wilhelm had a son, Herbard, who did not have legitimate heirs. With the extinction of this branch, the acquired estates and offices were transferred to the main line of the Auerspergs from Turjak.
The Rise of the Auerspergs among the Leading Noble Houses
Researchers regard Elisabeth of Reitenburg as one of the most important figures of the Auersperg lineage in the Middle Ages. She played a significant role in the expansion of their estates and in raising the family’s prestige.
In the late 14th and first half of the 15th century, the Auerspergs substantially expanded and consolidated their estates, already extending their influence into the region of Ig. This territorial growth and rise in status marked a turning point: the family rose among the most influential noble houses in Carniola. Elisabeth of Reitenburg played a crucial role during this period of political uncertainty.
